While education is included in GCAR’s membership, members awarded scholarships can travel to other NYS Boards and take one of these courses for free. Learn more about the program at NYSAR.com.

New Education Requirements Beginning in 2021

On October 23, 2019, Governor Cuomo signed into law a NYSAR supported amendment to Real Property Law §441(3)(a).  The amendment accomplishes two things, eliminating the exemption or “grandfathering” of brokers from having to complete continuing education and including 2.5 hours of ethical business practices and 1 hour of legal updates in the 22.5 hours of required continuing education.

So what education are you now required to take and when does it go into effect? As of July 2021, REALTORS® must take 22.5 hours of education which now includes the following content:

  • Three (3) hours of Fair Housing/Discrimination
  • One (1) hour of Law of Agency (or 2 hours if you’re in your first 2 years of licensure)
  • Two and a half (2.5) hours of business ethics
  • One (1) hour of legal updates
  • Fifteen (15) hours of elective classes

The effective date of the law is July 1, 2021.  Every licensee, including those real estate brokers that had previously claimed an exemption or “grandfathering”, whose license expires on or after July 1, 2021 will need to comply with the new requirements.  It should be noted that for compliance with the new law, the DOS will look at the actual date the license expires, not the date the licensee submits their renewal application to DOS.  Licensees whose expiration date is on or after July 1, 2021 will not be able to circumvent the new requirement merely by submitting their renewal prior to July 1, 2021.

The good news is that many grandfathered REALTORS® already recognize the value of continuing education and already take classes!  With GCAR including classroom education with membership, it’s easy to take advantage of this valuable benefit!

Sympathies are extended to:

The friends and family of GCAR member, Melissa Petalas, upon the passing of her nephew, Pasquale John “Patsy” Tirino, on September 16.
