As a not-for-profit, the Greater Capital Association of REALTORS® understands the importance of garnering community support through monetary means and volunteers who contribute their time and effort towards the goals of the many organizations throughout the Capital Region. To recognize these organizations and the individuals who work for and with them, GCAR instituted a Good Neighbor Award program in 2019, a local program to recognize a GCAR member who is making an extraordinary impact through community service.

This year the committee had two individuals who they felt were deserving of the award.

Miguel Berger, Howard Hanna

Over many years, Miguel has been active with numerous non-profit organizations including the MS Society, Susan B Komen, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, area schools, and the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, where he previously served as President and was instrumental in fundraising for the new state of the art building. Miguel has always had a special place in his heart for organizations that help animals. Through his ongoing work with the Humane Society, he became involved with the Mr. Mo Project, an organization that helps elderly dogs, that are not likely to be adopted, find foster homes, and help with their vet bills. Many of these dogs have been abandoned and given up on. Miguel’s big heart has helped with placing these animals in homes, keeping them safe, warm, and fed until they find a permanent home.

Donna Hunter, Thomas J. Real Estate

Donna has been involved with the Edinburg Emergency Squad for over 20 years. Over the years, Donna has taken the lead for the annual fundraiser by organizing details with the mail agency, letter writing, bookkeeping, etc.

Without the funds raised through Donna’s lead, the EES would not have the funds necessary to exist. Donna also helps with the annual boot drive, paperwork for grants for equipment, and miscellaneous funding for the squad. The Edinburg Emergency Squad is a small emergency ambulance service that fills a vital need within a rural community. She has provided the needed support behind the scenes while not wanting or expecting anything in return.
