STAR Rebates Just Got Easier
The state tax department said it will automatically issue STAR checks to homeowners who earn between $250,000 and $500,000 instead of requiring them to register with the state.
A law this year no longer provides the lucrative school-tax break as upfront savings on homeowners’ bills who are in $250,000 to $500,000 income bracket.
Instead, they will receive a check in the mail this fall, and initially, the program required homeowners to re-enroll in the program to ensure they get the check. But the tax department has been able to verify the incomes for 89 percent of the homeowners in that income bracket and therefore can automatically enroll them into the program.
For the other 11 percent, the tax department is asking them to provide further information to confirm their income and then their checks will be sent.
