Cultural Competency: Strength in Diversity and Implicit Bias: Strength in Commonality

CE Credit: 4

Instructor: Freddimir Garcia, HGAR Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer

Under all is the land” is what is stated in the REALTOR Code of Ethics. To serve all equally is to remove implicit bias from all interactions with clients and colleagues. Implicit bias is defined as the attitudes or stereotypes that affect an individual’s understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. Creating professionalism in the workplace and equity in all real estate interactions gives all demographics the chance at home ownership. The best business practice that we can teach real estate agents and brokers is allowing anyone the right to buy or rent a home without bias.

American society was built upon and thrives on the diversity of customs, traditions, and societies. It’s what makes America’s communal heritage uniquely exceptional. Therefore, to be culturally knowledgeable and aware is to strengthen those who live in this country. Cultural competency is defined as understanding cultural norms, preferences, and challenges within our diverse communities. To navigate the business and professional world is to be empathetic, understanding, and accepting of others’ cultural differences so we can appreciate our similarities to better the client’s life.
